Getting started

Before working with Excel, configure its language and regional settings to match the course materials.

Getting help

If you get stuck, review the relevant example, try the task again, and note where you are unsure. Ask questions in class—questions are always welcome. Questions about the mock exam are addressed collectively in class so everyone receives the same information; individual email replies about exam questions are generally not provided.

Useful resources

Helpful Excel and Python resources will be added here as the course progresses.

Frequently asked questions

Setup

What Excel setup do I need?

Use Excel with English function names, commas between function arguments, and periods as decimal separators. Follow the Excel language settings guide to configure and check your setup.

Why do Excel formulas from the course sometimes not work on my computer?

The course formulas use English function names, commas as argument separators, and periods as decimal separators. If your settings differ, use the Excel language settings guide to fix them.

What do I need for Python?

You need Python and the course’s Anaconda environment. Follow the setup and installation instructions provided through Canvas.

Do I need both Python and Anaconda?

Python is the programming language and runtime. Anaconda is a distribution that installs Python together with useful tools and packages. For this course, use the Anaconda setup provided through Canvas rather than installing the components separately.

Exam

How is the course assessed?

There is a 40-minute Excel exam worth 40 points and an 80-minute Python exam worth 80 points. Both are paper-based exams.

Can I use aids such as a calculator, laptop, Excel, or Python during the exam?

No. You will write Excel formulas on paper in the Excel exam and Python code on paper in the Python exam. Calculators, laptops, Excel, Python, and other aids are not permitted.

Are past exams or mock exams available?

A mock exam will be provided for the Excel part through Canvas. Check Canvas for mock exams and related exam-preparation materials for the Python part.

How should I ask questions about the mock exam?

Bring questions about the mock exam to class. They are addressed collectively so all students receive the same explanations and clarifications. Individual email replies about mock-exam questions are generally not provided.
